I’ve been at work almost 3 years and still have no benefits and shit
pay. I’ve seen at least 10 people who started after me get promoted.
Coworkers are always asking me for help and managers have told me they
appreciate my hard work and dedication, whatever bullshit they come up
with.
Last week I talked to a manager about full time opportunities and he basically said “wait til the spring/summer.”
Today
I found out they promoted a bunch of editors to supervisors this week. A
ll of
them started way after me. I know this is the emotion speaking but I’m
half tempted to walk in there during my shift tonight and tell them
“This is my last shift, bye.” Also don’t want to do those fucking
midnight surfing shifts next week. I’m done being taken advantage of.
I
don’t have a backup plan and I’ve been actively applying to jobs but I
could just freelance Photoshop or design stuff to build a better
portfolio. Pretty sure even if I charge $30 an hour I’d make twice as
much weekly. I don’t know why I keep sacrificing insane hours for shit
pay and at the end of the day I only have 2 expenses, gas + car.

#1 rule of not being happy with your job is find and secure
new job before you make any noise.
Everything is good when you’re at the office until you hand in your notice.
I learned this the hard way - don’t make the same mistakes I did.

Don’t torch any bridges, but if you’ve got a decent savings and are in a place you can be unemployed for a while, hand in your two week notice and then go from there. If you’d rather not do that, then job search until you find something then give them your notice.

Do you have a good relationship with management? If so, could you talk to one of them and explain that you feel like you’re being taken advantage of as an employee?

yeah i’m not gonna quit, it was more the emotions speaking

My first job was a contract job at on OEM with crummy benefits. A ll of the guys who got hired with me got converted to full time employees in year 1, after about 2.5 years I had enough and got a different job which got me better pay and better experience . That was basically my childhood dream job and I still smile every time I think about when I quit.
Always best to have something else lined up but since it sounds like you don’t have a lot of obligations I’d say it’s a good time to move.
Personally I’d like to give my boss a giant fortune cookie with my resignation letter in it. (Which is pos sible cause I found a company that makes them, yes I’ve been plotting this a long time. Why do you ask? )

I can talk to them about it and I have told them a few months ago how I feel when I see people who started after me get promoted and they just kinda shrugged.

Yep, venting is good. When you get angry, go home and look for jobs. There’s no reason you shouldn’t have bennies and decent pay when the economy is so good.

Definitely get out of dodge, but I’d get something lined up first so you don’t have to deal with the headache of an employment gap on your resume.
I’d also lay out a detailed list of accomplishments you’ve had over the last few years and bring that in to your manager.

Life is just one long quest for garage space... But yeah, it sounds like you should be shopping around for a better deal. Remember employment is just another business transaction - and there are no friends in business, just mutual interests
. If you can get a better deal or better conditions somewhere else, don’t stay out of loyalty or hope things will get better.

That sucks - do you have enough free time to start doing some of that sweet, sweet, cash-paying freelancing right now? If so, doing a bit of that will give you more confidence that, if you decide to walk, you really will be able to make ends meet while you look for the next job.
Good luck - hope you find something better soon - doesn’t sound to me like they’re treating you right, at all.

Plenty of free time! I feel a bit better now, that post was mostly emotion and i knew writing it out would be better than going in there pissed later

Get an offer and show it to them. Have the courage to walk/take the new job if they don’t match/beat it.

I’ve been applying! Also went
to this design club in NYC last week, gonna go again tomorrow

HA. Any offer I get would be better. I’ve had interviews and such the past year but no dice. I even interviewed for another position with the company and they told me next day after it was filled. They’re scum and don’t know how to treat people right.

Venting is good! Better to get it out here than getting all pissed off while you’re there.

The releasing of anger can better any medicine under the sun

Yep I’d check that out, and strangely enough you may have better luck looking for gigs outside of NYC, especially for creative-type positions.

I’ve had my eyes on Detroit area, my childhood friend lives there

If you’re in a position to freelance, you could start supplementing your income and building up a portfolio while still keeping your paycheck. Kind of a transition stage that could help the job search.

And never a bad thing to have an extra source of income once you find a new gig .

it’s underrated, I love the Detroit area, though it is a bit sensitive to slowdowns in the auto biz

it’s a really cool place, honestly can see myself living there after visiting him
